Simple examples using sockets

I am looking for some small example sources that use sockets to connect
and transmit between each other.  For example a simplified 'finger' server
and client (emphasis on simplified) would be good.

Also,  where would one look for the 'standards' relating to servers and
what they expect and what they are supposed to do (say the talkd server).
The man pages just don't go into much detail.

I would rather receive e-mail since time to read news has been very small.
