Problem with vi

Index: vi version 3.7, BRL-Unix Release 3 (Basically 4.2BSD)

Problem: Encryption mode in vi is causing flaky behavior.

Description: Our department secretaries use the Vax to type letters,
etc, and get them typed out on the laser printer. In this
particular case, we have a copy of the CS101's first fall
exam being prepared (And, of course, it's being kept encrypted).
The file got up to around 700 lines yesterday, and all afternoon
she was having problems with vi dying in different ways.

The way it would always start is that part of the buffer would
become "encrypted". And vi would display those characters as
the bare control characters. (Normally, it translates them
so printable sequences). So this is what confused her at
first, the cursor would jump around to a few strange places
then settle down to yet another strange place.

(Which I can re-create by encrypting a large file and
editting it, or by encrypting a smaller file and editting
THAT, and adding other files to it while in encryption).
The files I was playing with were around 50 to 100 k size.

I also got a core dump once. Unfortunately there isn't
	a symbol table in /usr/ucb/vi so I wasn't able to get a
stack trace. I'll fix that shortly. I also got a strange
message out. But I didn't have the presence of mind to
write it down. I looked through all the error messages
in the source and didn't see anything that looked familiar.

	Any of this sound familiar??????
