800 bpi on TU77, 4.3BSD

We are running 4.3BSD on a VAX 11/780 with a TU77 tape drive. I've
just discovered that we are unable to read or write 800 BPI tapes
(using /dev/rmt0 or /dev/rmt4) -- we get hard errors printed on
the console. It is possible that something is wrong with our hardware,
as we have had other problems with the TU77 drive and DEC maintenance
has swapped in and out many parts of the TU77 -- next time that they
are here, I plan to ask them to run diagnostics at 800 BPI. But before
I log a service call, I want to make sure that there are not problems
in the 4.3BSD driver. Has anyone else had success or failure with
800 BPI on a similar configuration?
Thanks in advance
