Need fast (4.3BSD) dump/tar/restore

During my recent misadventure with SunOS 4.0, I found that 
the dump/tar/restore utilities cause cartridge tapes
to *stream*.  Unfortunately, when I droped back to SunOS 3.5,
I found these utils make invalid system calls & don't work.

Does anyone have anything along these lines ??
