Kill a process

The following is one line shown in the output of 'ps -aug':

USER       PID %CPU %MEM   SZ  RSS TT STAT START  TIME COMMAND
kent       438  0.0  0.0    0    0 A0 I    Jun 20  0:00 <exiting>

How can I get rid of this process? I have used 'kill -9 438', but it
failed. I have another program which tells me that its STATE is
'socket'. My system is 4.3BSD running on a VAX11/785.
