Ah, but (replace-regexp "a*" "b") does not work correctly in GNU Emacs 18.55;
it misses the empty string just before the end of the buffer.  I found this bug
(and posted a bug report) after reading dmr's explanation of the bug that was
avoided in 'ed'.
