fix needed for sys5 uucp

I've just run across a problem with System V's UUCP.  When it generates
work file names it only uses one of the character positions to make each
file name unique.  This leads to problems with unprintable characters in the
file names when a large number of files are queued in a single job (as with
the Kermit distribution that we run here at okstate).

I'm sure this is an old problem, could someone mail me the fix?  Also, a list
of other known problems and fixes would be nice.
