SPARC and portability

Terry, do stop posting these 150-line screeds whining about how your sloppy
code won't port to the SPARC. You'd have the same experience on any number
of new machines. Some of us have known all along that things like padding
and alignment and variable-length argument lists are machine-dependent -- it
says so in K&R, among other places. The days when most machines were VAXes
or 68020s and you could get away with being lazy were a passing aberration,
not the normal state of affairs.

Incidentally, if you try aligning things carefully, you will find that your
code runs faster even on machines that will let you be sloppy about alignment.
