term.c in rn

In the term.c portion of rn (a readnews program), it gives me an error message
of "Cannot open /dev/tty". I am compiling on a Convergent S/640, and using the
new CTAM windowing enviornment. When I log into a shell, it works fine, but
when accessed through the windows it chokes. What is the workaround?
