For further reading on optimizing C code, you might want to read that
absolute gem of technical writing, "News Need Not Be Slow", by Collyer
and Spencer, in the proceedings of the Winter 1987 Usenix Conference.
(No, we don't get royalties on proceedings sales!)  We speeded up a
major program by about a factor of 20, without sacrificing portability
(no assembler involved).
