popen returns a FILE pointer.  To close this file pointer use pclose(),
not close(). I think this is what should be done (as you said, 
failing ttyname()):

FILE *f;
f=popen("/usr/bin/tty","r"); fscanf(f,"%s",ttyname); pclose(f)
