info on lex-like lexical analyzer generators

I'm looking for a lex clone with excellent compatibility, preferably PUBLIC
DOMAIN.  It should be portable.  (no 32-bit int dependencies would be nice.)
Please reply via e-mail to jnh at ecemwl.ncsu.edu so that you don't disrupt
the continuing saga of ((struct foo *) 0)->bar ...  A brief description of
features, availability, quality, etc., is all I need.
