Simulating a file system in memory

We have to port an embedded application from Z-80 based hardware running
under CP/M to 8088 based hardware running under some sort of PC-BIOS.
This means that I have to simulate a file system in memory and write the
necessary system calls to access it, i.e. at least open(), close(), read()
and write(). Programming language used is C.
I guess that this *must* have been done before :-) Unfortunately deadlines
don't support re-inventing the wheel (though I would LOVE doing it...)
Therefore I would be highly grateful for pointers to source code, maybe
also literature (I have the standard OS stuff on my bookshelf).
Please E-mail as we don't get these newsgroups regularly.
Thanks in advance
