HELP: Using a Gif file in C

Please can you help me, I have files which contain maps in GIF format made on
the macintosh. Now, I would like to read and manipulate these files with the C  
programming language(turbo c). Please can you advise me how to do this and what
c functions I need to use. Thankyou in anticipation of your help,
