What is an improper posting?

Greetings!

I have been reading comp.lang.c for a while now and I find it to be very
helpful and informative. Once in a while, someone will complain about
'improper' postings to this group. I would like to know what constitutes
an improper posting.

Oh, I can see that postings regarding the Gulf War, the L.A. Lakers, Cobol
and/or Twin Peaks do not belong here. But what about compiler specific
questions? For example, I use Microsoft C 6.0a and recently had a compiler
related question (I had a program with a lot of data that would compile but
would die at the link stage - I needed to compile with the /GT3 qualifier).
I was going to post the question to the net, but I eventually discovered the
answer by calling Microsoft. Would this have been considered a proper posting
for comp.lang.c? Or should it have gone somewhere else? Please respond to me
directly to keep from cluttering the group.

Thanks in advance. I hope this posting is not too improper!
