This becomes trivial if you use a window in the emacs editor for your
session.  I am using a Gosling emacs.  I suspect this capability is
available in most versions of emacs.  The main problem with this
approach is that it is slower than communicating directly with the
shell.  If this is interesting to you I can give more info.
