6300 motherboards without socketed floppy ctrllr PALs

After posting my message about hanging a 1.44 Mb 3.5" drive off of my
6300, I got several calls on the subject. One was from the drive
vendor themselves (Shamrock). In my article I mentioned that one of
the pins of the floppy controller PAL had to be lifted. There seems
to be some rumour going around that early 6300 motherboards had discrete
logic instead of a PAL for this part of the circuitry. Is anyone aware
of this? I got my 6300 in the middle of 1985 with Rev 1.1 ROMs and I
forget which mboard revision, and there is a PAL on it. Does anyone
know of any earlier boards without a PAL for much of the floppy circuitry?
(If you have info please post it so others who have asked the question
can read it).

Thanks,

Jeff
