3b1 nethack fonts (don't seem to work)

Does anybody out there that has a 3b1 and runs nethack 3.0 have the
3b1-specific font installed and working?  I followed the README to the
letter, but have been unable to get the fonts displayed when hack comes up.

No error messages or anything, hack just looks like it did before (i.e.,
no apparent font redefinition).  Any clues?

All help is appreciated...
