Can't recal (3b1) HD? No sweat! (in my case, dead wd1010)

Talk about perfect timing! I had just received the WD2010 from the group
buy (thanks again, Thad for taking this on). I was still reading the
instruction sheets. I look up at the screen and WHAT DO I SEE ???

#HDERR ST:51 EF:4 CL:4201 CH:4200 SN:4201 SC:4207 SDH:4221 DMACNT:FFFF
	DCRREG:91 MCRREG:D700
#HDERR ST:51 EF:4 CL:4201 CH:4200 SN:4200 SC:4208 SDH:4221 DMACNT:FFFF
	DCRREG:91 MCRREG:D700
#HDERR ST:51 EF:4 CL:4201 CH:4200 SN:4200 SC:4208 SDH:4221 DMACNT:FFFF
	DCRREG:91 MCRREG:D700

panic: IO error in push

Time to hit the hardware reset. The screen clears and the little squares
start appearing... and never stop appearing. No noise from the HD
whatsoever, the floppy light is on all the time.

Time for the diagnostics disk. HD test gives: Can't recal: response = 10.
No noise whatsoever from the HD.

Time for floppy Unix. The boot floppy does fine, I insert the floppy file
system and hit <RETURN>... BOOOMMM!

The same #HDERR stuff and "panic: iinit"

I didn't intend to install the WD2010 yet, but it's time to open the machine.
Since I've already had so much practice doing this, I have the machine opened
up, the wd1010 taken out, the wd2010 put in, and the machine closed up in less
than 1/2 hour.

Power on... IT WORKS !!! And then, while checking the file system... CRASH!
But this one's no problem, I've seen it before (panic: hard disk timeout);
nothing that the reset button can't fix.

Hopefully, reformatting the hard disk, as Jan says, will get rid of that one
for good.

I hope this saves somebody a "panic: my data's lost"...
