Help - UNIX-pc / curses - stty problem.

Configuration:
3B1 and 7300 both running UNIX 3.51a and Curses package 3.0.
Using external Wyse wy-60 terminals on tty001 (or any port).

Problem:
Curses programs that use the 'cbreak()' function causes the output to
the terminals to have the 8th bit set for some, but not all,
characters. This causes the Wyse terminals to take characters out
of its "Multinational" set resulting in garbage strings on the
display. I haven't found any pattern that would show when it decides
  to add the 8th bit.
The built-in "system console" doesn't have the problem.

The function 'raw()' works OK, but, of course, loses the desired input
  processing.

Request:
Any help or suggestions of things to look for would be appreciated.
	Please e-mail replies.
Thanks Merv.
