Unix PC RS232 Setup

I recently purchased an AT&T Unix PC. I have had some trouble setting up the
telephone manager. Here at Purdue, we needed to hook up a Data Over Voice
unit to it. I tried hooking up an external modem to it, but could not get
it to work. I did everything that the manual said to do: installed ATE
(terminal emulator) and initialized the RS232 port. We could make a profile
for the modem, but when attempting to add a new number to the phone directory
(in the ATE program), the program would lock up. We tried another terminal
emulator, TE, from Bell Laboratories at Naperville, but this will not allow
us to write a new profile. I don't know if I explained this very well, but
I have spent hours trying to figure this out.

There have been no problems with using the internal 1200 baud MODEM, using
TE only (ATE didn't even work). ATE was the program given to us when I bought
the system.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!
