Ray tracing and Shading

I am trying to do a little ray tracing on my 7300. I have some software that
generates a 64 level gray scale picture, but, of course, the 7300 has a
two level gray scale display. So I tried to group 4 pixels together to give
me a 5 level scale with marginal success. From 10 feet away the screen looked
great !

Now then, I was hoping someone had some shading programs that would do something
like gathering adjacent 'like valued' pixels together into larger regions and
then perform pixel shading across the entire region. This would generate a
much smoother image. Anyone heard of such software ?
