libcurses.a problems on 3b1 w. 3.5 dev set

I always have problems trying to compile curses programs.  Missing
symbols at load time (tgetent, etc).  This happens whether I use
regular libraries or shared libs w. ccc.  Is this a common problem
(I have the 3.5 development set)?  Is there a work around solution?
