For what it's worth, a ZOOM (tm) 2400 external I had occasion to sample
recently (ROM rev. level 9) had _DCD_always_on_ as its factory-default
setting (obtained with AT&F). It, however, ignored its own DCD output
on pin 8, and connected (signalling CONNECT) and disconnected (going on-hook
and signalling NO CARRIER) just as sweet as you please, in originate mode
at 2400 and 1200, with the CD light and pin 8 signal on the whole time.
So: no unexpected phone bills on this account.
(Never tried answer mode; gave it back cuz 300 baud acted flaky, and I still
-- occasionally -- need that.)
[But then I _am_ just a babe-in-the-woods, and not just when it comes to modems]
