serial port question

Does anyone out there have experience in read/write-ing "RAW" data to
one of the serial ports on an IRIS?  I have been trying to use ioctl
to set the mode of the port, but so far have been unable to send any
data out from my program.

If I do an echo or cat, I can get my interface box to indicate that
its recieving data, so the port and box are operating to some extent.
My program opens the port, sets the mode with ioctl, and then tries to
write out a byte.  Nothing ever gets recieved, however.

Any ideas?
