Encapsulated PostScript

Can anyone shed some light on "encapsulated PostScript" for me? I have programs
which create PostScript files that display nicely with "psview", while others
need to use the entire canvas with "psh". Some print nicely on the LaserWriter
and others do not. And also, a file which displays well on the Iris does not
work with the DOS program WordPerfect 5.0

I have read the "red book" and the "blue book" from Adobe, and I suppose
Appendix C in the red book us attempting to explain this, but I think I have
a mental block. Are there conversion programs available to encapsulate and
un-encapsulate (???) PostScript files? Thanks in advance for any info.
