1/2" tape drive to a Personal Iris?

I am new to this group, so I am not sure if this question was asked
before. 

I am working on a
 medical project, and I need to read 1600 bpi 1/2" tape from a CT
scanner. I have a Cipher tape drive which has Pertec interface. I know
of a couple of vendors selling VME controller cards, but they did not
have device driver software for Iris. Some of them have driver
software for Unix, but I am not sure if the porting is feasible to an
inexperienced guy. Does anyone has an experience in this kind of
problem?

I may have to buy a 1600bpi 1/2" tape drive system if the above
attempt does not work. I'd like to have suggestions on the tape drive
system.
