IrisTrouble with Vertical Text

Greetings ...

I am trying to use SGI font manager software and associated utilities
on a SGI 4D1-3.2 Iris and have had trouble with the following:  in
writing a y-label for a plot routine I can't seem to get UNadulterated
vertically oriented text from any of the major fonts available to me.
Has anyone else had this experience?  Can anyone tell me the procedure
for correcting this?  Thanks alot!
