latex -> previewable postscript?

it's very frustrating.

latex produces a dvi file (previewable, but with no figures).
dvi2ps produces postscript (with figures, but not previewable).

does anyone know if or how dvi2ps output may be filtered so 
that it doesn't totally confuse sgi's _psview_ previewer?

and, to sgi:  please, can we have a working _psview_?  think
of all the trees that would be spared.

p.s.  psh can't display this postscript either (but it prints fine).
