How can I tell the edge debugger to expand tabs

I am using the vi editor with tabstops for indentation and when using the
edge debugger, I found that edge seems to expand all tabs by 8 spaces which
is too much. Does anyone know how to tell edge to expand tabs by a specific
number of spaces?
