dump utility for IRIX?

No immediate help to you, but dump is in the upcoming release.

None of the tape backup programs restrict you to 'cassette' tapes,
by which I assume you meant the QIC24 or QIC150 cartridges.

tar, bru, and cpio all work with all of the tape drives we
support, and undoubtedly more that we don't, as well as 
remote tapes, and stdout.  This means that 9 track, 8mm,
QIC24, and QIC150 all work.

Having dump/rdump won't help your choice of tape drives much,
unless you have machines that support rdump, but not the
/etc/rmt interface, or even rsh.
