ls -l dumps core

If a file belongs to a user whose id is not defined in the passwd file a
ls -l will dump core.  This is a BUG which was introduced with 3.3.1  It
worked under 3.2.1 and it works on our suns.  

We are running yellow pages (oops sorry that's NIS)
and nfs if that makes any difference.
