It is very late and I was hoping to get some stuff done on my IRIS when I found
the console in a funny state.

system is a 4D20 running IRIX 3.3.2 and 8 bitplanes

I couldn't use the visual login to get in. It

seemed to be stuck. I tried the Vulcan Deathgrip ( shift-cntl-/-f12) and the
screen cleared , but only gave the grey background, no login screen. I
then logged in from another terminal as root and rebooted. The same thing happe
ned. When the system came up , I only had the grey background, no visual login
screen. I relogged in from a terminal , looked at SYSLOG and found :

I then changed the login to no visual login , and then rebooted again. I
then got a black background asking for console login on the graphics console.
I tried to login , and the background remained totally black ( I could see and
move the red cursor ). I then relogged in via the other terminal and saw in

Now I am not sure , but this spells graphics hardware failure to me. Is
it possible my system is in a funny state, or is this really a graphics fail-
ure?? The reason I am loathe to ask for a new board is that this board is 6
days old , and I am getting an upgrade RSN ( I hope ). I hate to get the hardwa
re guy out for a couple of days or a week at most to use a board unless there
is no alternative. I am going to call the hotline on Monday, but does
anyone have any ideas that may help ??

    Thanks.

                                                     Regards,
                                                     Len Zaifman
