problems with "rsh tar"|dd

Mark,
     This is a minor point, but you're using the 'B' option on tar and a 1K
input buffer size on dd.  That looks inconsistant, since the 'B'
option (says the man page) means that it will use "20 blocks per record", 
which by my math = (512 * 20) = 10240 = 10K.  Could this be a contributor
to the problem?  Good Luck in any case.
