double copies of calendar under 4.0.1

I suppose this has come up before ... excuse my ignorance, but ...

We have several 4.0.1 systems around here on which people run the old unix
"calendar" reminder service.  On these systems, people are receiving two
e-mail reminders about everything that is in their calendar file.  The
first one occurs about 30 seconds after midnight, and the second occurs
about 90 seconds after midnight.  So far as I can tell, it's not due to
clients also running calendar.

Has anyone seen this problem and/or know what the solution is?
