Problems in dbxtool with archived libraries

Does anyone have any info about the following problem:

When dbxtool is invoked on an executable which
was made with some source files in an archive
library( i.e. created by 'ar'), it goes into
the wrong files/functions when the 'file' or 'func'
  commands are used.
We find that the problem comes from having LONG source
file names(longer than 15), since 'ar' truncates file
names in its tables to 15 chars.
When file names are modified to 15 chars., dbxtool
can enter the file, and the functions therein.

Does anyone have any other solution ?? Truncating file names seems too
restrictive, now that one is used to a limit of (at least) 256 characters.

We have Sun4s and Sun3s, all running SunOS 4.0.
