Formatting Maxtor XT 1140 on Sun2

I am having difficulty formatting a Maxtor XT 1140 disk on a Sun 2/120 
with an Adaptec ACB4000 SCSI/ST506 adapter.. 
I type the following to format:
	# data cylinders 916
	# alternate cylinders 2
	buffered seek 2 /* I don't know about this... */
	cylinder # to start write precomp 918 /* the 1140 doesn't need any */
	# heads 15
	#sectors/track 32
	interleave 4
At the end of the format I get errors on cylinders 916 and 917 of the
general form:
	WRITE FAILED CYL=916
SENSE BYTES 21 6 B7 80
SENSE CLASS 2 CODE 1 adr_val=0
	ILLEGAL BLOCK ADDRESS

Are my numbers wrong? Has anyone successfully done this? While I'm
at it, is there a standard partion layout? Thanks.
