Can someone compare 3.5 and 4.0.1?

When 4.0 was released, we say enough nasty stories in this group to decide
that we would wait for something better. We have received 4.0.1. It
certainly claims to address the worst of the complaints.  However, we
would feel better about taking the plunge if someone else would report in
some detail. Hearing that 4.0.1 is better than 4.0 says something, but not
very much. Can someone compare 4.0.1 to 3.5?

[[ 4.0.1 is basicallyjust a bunch of bug fixes.  As I understand it,
nothing was changed with the intent of improving performance.  However,
there are planned performance improvements in 4.1.  --wnl ]]
