using 'c' disk partitions?

I'm looking for advice on how safe it is to mount a 'c' partition (ie the
whole disk) as a file system.  I've heard it both ways; those who say 'no'
usually warn about overwriting bad block information (although it seems
this would be dependent on the type of disk).

I've got a Sun-3/280 running SunOS3.5
           Xylogics 451 controllers
           Hitachi DK815-10 disks
