Optimizer: why hangs with different options than -O

When I've tried to optimize large fortran stuff, I've had much better luck
running "fsplit" on it first; sometimes, just splitting it will make it
optimize o.k. - other times, you can find which module is giving you
grief, and go from there.  Ciao!
