Compiling GNUemacs on SparcStation1, Shared Libraries?

Is it possible to compile GNUemacs under SunOS 4.0.x using shared
libraries?  Why does xmakefile specify -Bstatic to ld?  You would have to
mess with GNU's crt0.c to call ld.so, has anyone done this?  Why doesn't
the SparcStation have unshared (.a) versions of libsuntool and
libsunwindow?  These unshared versions were provided with 4.0.1 on our Sun
3/260, but do not exist in /usr/lib on the SparcStation.
