mount /pcfs -- peculiarity

The following symptons (SunOs 4.1.1 SPARC 1+):

cd /usr/etc
./mount /pcfs		<-- works
cd /
/etc/umount /pcfs	<-- works
/etc/mount /pcfs	<-- does not work
/usr/etc/mount /pcfs	<-- does not work either
cd /usr
etc/mount /pcfs		<-- fails as well
cd etc
./mount /pcfs		<-- Works

I'm flabbergasted, does anyone have an explanation for this peculiar
behaviour?
