Sun OS 4.1.1 bombs out on tar to tape

We have a 3/60 running under SunOS 4.1.1 as a file server, and when
I back up my directory to (9-track) tape innocently via tar the system
crashes with some kind of bus error, forcing a reboot.

During the reboot, the file system sync attempt siezes up so before
entering "b", I have to issue a "sync" command, which gets the reply
"FC5 Space" -- what's that?

The suspect command is, "tar cvf /dev/rst8 *" (from my home directory)
and the write pin on the tape is not locked.
