Internal CD-player loses device driver

Aparently this is not a new problem, but once in a while our internal
CD-player (in a 4/470 file server) loses its device driver.
so when a mount or any other command is issued to /dev/sr0
it reponds with "no such device or address".

I have heard that power cycling the cd-player seems to fix it,
but since ours is built in the only fix seems to be rebooting the
machine. Since this is a file server this does not go over well with
most people.

So if anybody has any solutions as to how to either prevent the cd-player
from disappering, or how to get it back when it does I would be eager to
hear from you.
