We struggled with the same problem for weeks until I accidentally
discovered that it arose because certain users tried to send letters in
which the last character was not a newline.  This can only happen when
they use a non-vi editor or transfer the letter from, say, a Macintosh.

PS:  The From: field of your article indicates a US address, whereas
     your signature mentions Switzerland.  I haven't been able to reach
