OK, I give up.

When I posted my previous message, I thought I had it working.
I was wrong. Now, I've tried the following:

1) disabling NEW_TTY_DRIVER just in readline. various oddities result.
2) disabling NEW_TTY_DRIVER in readline.c and jobs.c.
^a is like ^c, and stty erase ^? goes into "stopped (tty output)"
3) setting bsd with TXSETLD where jobs.c sets NDISC. stty erase ^?
stops as above, plus things like vi which IBM ships dependent
on the POSIX line discipline don't work.
4) setting M_OS to SYSV, fails to compile due to missing include files.

If someone out there has a working bash, I sure wish they'd post
diffs.
