questions about sendmail

I tried to start the sendmail daemon in my 1.1 system today.
Can someone suggest reasons why incoming mail is not annouced?
I can send and receive mail over our network, but there are
no "You have mail" or "You have new mail" messages.  Also, what fields
are crucial to change in the supplied sendmail.cf?
