I received several replies in short time. Thanx !

Among the advice I got was to use a mo_ speed, which in turn uses
the MODEM line flag in /etc/gettydefs (this was given me as separate
advice, too) This will HUP any processes attached to a line losing
carrier.

The problem, though, it turns out, is that my modem cable isn't
correctly wired to report carrier loss. Thanx all who said this !

Now, I just have to get the pinouts to rewire the cable. Any
volounteers ? :-)

Thax all,
