Oh yeah, the hardware mod was required since A/UX couldn't
read or write to the floppies with an accelerator card going
above 40MHz (or so I've gathered... the mod was ONLY required
for the 50MHz version)...

Therefore, I guess that they somehow intercept calls to the floppy
drivers and do something at that point.
