To answer my own question, the number of "buffers" as reported by pstat IS
NBUF... in fact:

$ pstat -m

2500 buffers: 0 busy, 0 wanted, 1748 done, 749 nodev        /* NBUF */
128 out of 650 UFS inodes active                            /* NINODE */
18 out of 150 processes active                              /* NPROC */
73 out of 400 files active                                  /* NFILE */

Total memory = 32764K, currently free = 19952K
